Spices

Planting a spice garden in 2010 was one of the best things we ever chose to make in the garden!  If you don't have one, think about making even a small one of just your most commonly used or favorite spices, you won't regret it!

Péter is an incredible cook, I think he missed his other calling in life, unfortunately I do not fancy myself a gourmet cook or even a good one and actually I do not like to cook, but using fresh spices has been alot of fun even for me and the taste of fresh spices is impossible to describe.  If you have never smelled fresh basil, rosemary, oregano, chives....you are truly missing out on something wonderful!

This is the diagram of this years spice garden (not exactly to scale). The spice names are in English and Hungarian. I learned that a few spices get to big for the 3 level wood box tiers, so I removed them this spring and planted them into large plastic pots and buried them nearby.  It was a bit of a shock for them, but they were tough and are recovering nicely.  The plastic pots also help them to stop spreading themselves everywhere, spices are nice, but rampant ones are not!

New lesson learned, fennel needs more room!  It still is too small to eat, so it may not work out, but if it does, I need to plant it out of the box tiers.
